![]() Crews rescue dog stuck in pipe Basset hound alerts its owner to Rottweiler mix that was trapped since last Saturday. By Eric Robinette Staff Writer Friday, November 14, 2008 Lacy Land hugs her dog, Lady, after she is rescued by emergency crews from a storm drain. The dog had reportedly been stuck in the pipe since Saturday, Nov. 15, before she was discovered by a neighbor's dog.Click to enlarge Middletown fire and police personnel may have been the ones to rescue a dog from a sewage pipe in Gladell Park, but it took another dog to find her. The dog in peril, Lady, was a 10-year-old Rottweiler mix who had been missing since Saturday, Nov. 8, said owner Lacy Land. Land approached a friend, Bob Curtis, who went out to look for Lady with his dog, Mayzie, a 7-year-old basset hound. During their walk, the dog immediately went toward a culvert in the park near Grand Avenue and Sutphin Street on Friday morning, Nov. 14. "I came here and a heard a little whimper. Mayzie stuck her nose right down there and she wouldn't move," Curtis said. Police, fire and Middletown Public Works crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m. and found Lady's head sticking out of the pipe, the rest of her body apparently wedged inside. "She fell into it ... it was covered with ivy. She came in after a cat," Land said tearfully at the scene as crews worked to free her pet. Although Land was anxious to free Lady, fire department Capt. Paul Lolli told her they would take it slow. "Sometimes it's better going slower than faster. If it was my dog down there I'd want to get her right out, too," he said. Rescuers attempted to cut through the pipe, but ultimately decided it was safer to sedate the dog and pull her out. A Middletown veterinarian, Chrisy Myers, administered the sedative. Firemen pulled Lady from the pipe shortly before 11 a.m. as Land screamed and embraced her "baby." "You're going to be all right now. You're going to come home and get cozy," Land said to Lady, who was taken to the Middletown Animal Hospital on Grand Avenue to be checked out. "Here's the real hero," Lolli said of Mayzie, who was still on hand during the rescue. "I'm just glad we found her and glad we were able to help out," Curtis said.
