Smile Doggie Doses

Doggie Doses

Do you dread giving pills to your pooch? Try this approach.

First, place your palm on top of her snout, with your fingers on one side of her mouth and thumb on the other. Gently lift the lips and insert your index finger behind the long upper teeth on one side and your thumb behind the long upper teeth on the other side. You may need to squeeze lightly to accomplish this. When you do, pull her nose up and with your other hand drop the pill in the back of the mouth, behind the hump of the tongue. Close her mouth and immediately bring her nose back down, holding her mouth shut. She should swallow right away. If she doesn't, try blowing on her nose or squirting water into the side of her mouth with a turkey baster.

Wow, what a lot of work compared to sticking it in a piece of wiener and throwing it up in the air and letting them catch it an swallow it before the other animals can get it LOL.

My dogs are stinkers. I have to give pills this way. If I put pills in food. They will eat the food and spit out the food. Expecially Xena. Somethimes but ONLY sometimes I can get meds into Gotti with a peanut butter sandwich!

Sampson's pretty good about taking his pills! Thor on the other hand likes to spit them out. Thank goodness he doesn't have to take them that often. Thanks for the tip!

Sounds like the same approach I use to give pills to Calvin, except he still spits them out sometimes..I have to do it 5 times sometimes before he finally swallows the pill :P
