Default Carpeted floors vs hard wood floors

My husband and I are ripping up the carpeting in our house. (many pets other than Dexter marking have used the carpets in our house as their bathrooms.) We are putting in wood flooring with area rugs, except on the stairs, those are going to be carpeted. We are getting the laminate wood flooring, as we like it first off and there is a cushioning to it a bit.

What are your ideas of wood flooring versus carpeting. Tell us why you feel this way.

Much better!

I had carpet everywhere in my old apartment and it was hard to clean (it also depends on what type of carpet you have of course). Hairs can get really stuck in some type of carpets..which makes it a lot harder to vacuum. Plus, I never had the feeling it was 100% clean, because you can't see everything.

Now, I have tiles in my living room, which is really easy..and thick vinyl (which looks like laminate) upstairs. It's much better, very easy to clean. The only downside is that you see hair and dust sooner..so you'll probably have to vacuum more often, but shorter

I would never get carpet again myself as long as I have pets (which is probably forever).

I agree with Leon on this one. In our old apartment we had carpet through out and it was a NIGHTMARE. I hated it. In our new place we have all hardwood .. It is easy to keep clean. I bought a 'swiffer sweep n Vac and it works wonders. If it is just a quick clean up, it will do the trick!! We just put area rugs in the spots that we wanted them (bedroom by the bed, livingroom, etc)
I would take hardwood over carpet ANYDAY

I have to agree with everyone on this one I love hard wood flooring also It is so much prettier than carpet & I don't care what color the carpet is the hardwood is still nicer.Easier to clean and the animals slide on it when you play with them.

The reason I said we were having carpeting on the stairs is because the pups lay on the stairs, well on laundry day I go up and down the two flights of stairs. I have instead of dropping the clothes basket, will try not to step on my babies and trip or miss the step and down I go. I do not get it, just drop the basket, right?!

My opinion on hardwood versus carpet is with the general consensus. Hardwood please!!!
We had carpet in our old house in the living room and we were constantly shampooing it because we also had a dog that had accidents. The shedding was terrible from the dog as well and it took forever to vacuum. In this house we have porcelain tiles in the kitchen and hallways and hardwood in the bedrooms and dining room and the bathrooms have that peel and stick stuff that will definitely be ceramic tile when the time comes to redo those rooms.

Crispy, you are so right about maybe I should tie a pillow to my rear end. I will tell you exactly how graceful I am, I always go head first. Maybe I should wear a bicycle helmet too!

I would have to pick carpet. Only because of my Xena's hips. I am always concerned with her slipping on the kitchen floor (ceramic tile). Expecially on a rainy or snowy day. However I totally agree with all of you about hardwood, laminate, and tile being easier to clean. Expecially with all the clean up I had last week with Gotti. How come dogs can never puke on the tile!!!
