Default Barking

Anyone have barkers that do not stop even with a clicker. Our neighbors dog is like this which then causes my Dexter to "talk" back. Man when they get going it get loud.

What do you do to stop the barking? Without teaching them that it is ok to protect the house.

That sounds so cute! How on earth did you do that? Our Lucy is quite the whiner and it really gets on my nerves at times. Daisy the hound is quite the howler and has a really loud deep voice. I would love to get them both to whisper and I am sure they would love to teach me to do the same since I start yelling at them both to shut up when it gets too crazy around here.

Well this is what we did every time he would bark. We would put our finger over our mouth and tell him in a soft voice. HOOCHIE NO WISPER!!! So when he would bark soft we would give him a treat. After a while he learnedif he just moved his mouth with no sound he would get his favoret treat. Here is a picture of my late Hoochie. He was a dane lab mix. Hoochie.jpg

Dar,

That sounds like a great idea, if you do not mind I may use it.

Thank you very much for sharing that. It would be funny to see a dog's mouth moving and nothing coming out.

How long did it take Xena to learn it, if you do not mind me asking?

Beth,

It took about a month or so for Xena to learn to do it. Mind you she was a puppy at the time. If your dogs know the speak command, you could try teaching them to whisper by catching them before they do the full bark and reward them then. Before the "whole bark" comes out of their mouth. This method can also help. Its really a cute trick.

Hoochie looks so lovable in that picture. I bet it was so cute to see him whisper. I bet you miss him so much. Thanks for sharing that with us.
