We got our lovebird, Mott The Hoople, from a breeder. I saw an ad in our daily newspaper and I wanted to adopt either a lovebird or a cockatiel, so we arranged to take Mott. Our male budgie, Newman, came from a small family-owned pet store. It's gone out of business now. All our other birds are rescues. Our female budgies came from two different homes where they were no longer wanted. Our little finch came to us because the woman who was caring for him also had a cat, and the cat was terrorizing the poor bird. All our birds fly freely about our apartment all day. They only go into their cages to eat and sleep.

Well one cat was acquired from a home where he was abused by one of the owners, 2 were gotten from my sister when her cat had kittens, my dog was discovered by the dump by a boat dock where somebody left him. Three of my horses were bought as a family group because the owner needed money, four of them were being fed cattle feed and looked to be starving with their ribs showing, and one was being retired from the show ring so the owner had no use for him anymore.

Well before we had Lucy and Daisy our current dogs we had Maggie a Staff/Mastiff. Maggie was the pup of our ex daugher-in-law's dog Precious. My husband and I have never witnessed puppies being born but we were fortunate enough to be there when Precious was giving birth. Maggie was the first one out of the "chute" and while the other puppies were anxious to be at their "mommy's" teats she was content to snuggle with me. I did not want another pup because a few years prior I had to put down our beagle Chester and vowed I would never go through that heartache again. Well silly me for thinking I could resist this warm, soft creature with puppy breath! We lived in a city however that had a ban on Pit bulls but our house was on the market to be sold and we were looking in the country for another home so we figured it would be safe to keep her. We had to wait for 6 weeks and in those weeks I had some second thoughts but didn't want to disappoint my then daughter-in-law so we kept our word and brought her home. Well talk about being my shadow......she was the best thing that had happened to us. She was so cute and loving and smart!!!! We found a house in the country and Maggie just loved it. We lived on a highway but she was always with us so we never worried until one day I had to go away for a day and Maggie stayed home with my husband who adored her and she him. I guess she was so used to being with me 24/7 that she went looking for me and before my husband could stop her she ventured on to the highway from a gully in front of the house (the driver never saw her) and was killed. We were totally devastated. She was only 6 months old!!!! I desparately wanted another dog just like her and we found a woman who sold Mastiff/Rottweilers and Lucy looked just like Maggie as a puppy so we got her. I love Lucy but it is true that you can never ever replace one dog with another and you should always wait until you are over the devastation of your loss. We have had Lucy for almost 5 years now and shortly after we got her (4 months) my husband came home with Daisy a hound of some sort that a co-worker couldn't keep and was apparantly a stray that he had found. They are very good friends but Lucy is in charge and keeps her in line. We have no need for a door bell because if anyone comes on our property Lucy barks like mad and Daisy howls her heart out. It is a lot of fun when my husband comes home on the afternoon shift at 1a.m. I swear Daisy's howl is saying he's HOOOOOOOOME. Anyways that is how we have the dogs we have today. Maggie is still on the property she loved for such a short time (we buried her out back near the trees) and I will never ever forget that little girl.

![]() Sorry to hear about your losses crispy, fortunately I have never had to bury a pet and I can't imagine how hard it must be. It must have been aweful for the driver as well, I drove over a hedgehog once and felt bad for a long time.

Sorry for your loss. My dog Javis died of cancer two years ago. I miss him so much we adopted him and his sister Chiba together. I was so worried about Chiba adjusting to life without her brother. We adopted another pup a few months ago and she seems to like him. It's never easy loosing a loved one. I'm glad you decided to get more dogs it may not replace your loved one but it sure helps.
