Default Raccoons

Polly and Friends
Polly and Friends is a non-profit organization dedicated to raccoons: those living in the wild and those in captivity. Our purpose is to help raccoons: not only though direct care, but also by educating humans on how special they are. Peaches is our first disabled educational raccoon. She goes with us to schools and events, touching lives just by being herself. If she were able to survive in the wild we would return her there in the same way we do for all self-sufficient wildlife.

Welcome to the forum!! I commend you for the work you do with raccoons.
My father once found an abandoned baby raccoon in the woods of the church camp he was director of..and brought it home fo us to take care of..I was very young at the time and dont remember too much about him, but we didnt keep him that long because he grew so fast and needed to be somewhere where he could be free. I think my dad had our vet take him to either a zoo or a wildlife sanctuary. We named him Sam, I remember, and I remember crying because I wanted to keep him...

Please continue to post and I love your website!!

Meet Peaches and I!!!

This is my biography. I am the Director of Polly and Friends. I recently co-founded this non-profit organization and I am the director. Polly and Friends is dedicated to helping raccoons world wild. My very first raccoon spend her entire life with me. Her name was Polly. Her story began 10 years ago. At six months her original care giver gave up on her because Polly was dying. With the help of our vet and my friend Anne and I we helped her get better. She was never able to live in the wild because of brain damage caused by lack of medical care when she was young. Over her ten years of life many raccoons came in and out of our home. Polly was nine years old when I named the organization after her and all her friends over the years. Shortly after naming Polly and Friends I was devastated, Dr. Guhrt told me nothing could save Polly. She had terminal liver cancer that had already spread. October 5, 2006 Polly past away. She was placed in the ground in the woods where wild raccoons walk. I always dreamed she would someday live in the woods with healthy raccoons. My dreams finally came true. I now have a predominately disable raccoon in my care named Peaches. Peaches has much worse brain damage than Polly did. The canine distemper was the cause of Peaches' issues. She enjoys doing educational programs and events. Peaches bonded with me as a baby and will not let anyone else handle her. Her and I will be together until her lifeless body is placed in the ground beside Polly. I hope this is very far in the future.

Peaches Family
Peaches was very sick as a baby. After over coming illness the first brain illness she became very sick again at one year old. Once again she’s gotten passed her illness. Peaches is quickly returning to her former brain function. Peaches resilience and ability to bounce back has been amazing. Just like all raccoons Peaches wants what she wants and now. She’s not yet walking but has become very good at scooting around. Peaches expects me to be holding her if I’m in the same room with her. I left her on the floor across the room from me for a few minutes. The time we were apart turned out to be much shorter than I planned. Peaches put all of her energy into getting across the room and into my arms. It didn’t take long. Soon she was on my lap getting her ears rubbed. What Peaches wants Peaches gets.
Some would say Peaches is spoiled. I don’t like that word in this context. Raccoons live in families. When only one or two people handling orphan babies little ones will bond with those two care givers and still be naturally scared of general humans. When babies loose their mother and are being cared for by humans its best they get touched and cuddled from their foster mother the way they would in the wild from their biological mom. Being touched when they are young helps their brains develop. Healthy normal raccoons will distance themselves from their human care givers as they become mature and move outdoors. In the case of raccoons like Peaches this does not occur because they never reach that level of maturity. For Peaches I’m the only family she know. Peaches will never be able to return to the wild and live with other raccoons. By allowing her to continue to bond with me I give her myself as a family for her to socialize with. Raccoon that can never survive on their own need extra attention to be happy. This is very true in Peaches case. She craves the love and attention from me she would normally get from her family in the wild.
