Kirby, rescued from Katrina - Added: 02/06/2006

Kirby, rescued from Katrina
“This is Kirby, a small Pekingnese. He was one of the many dogs rescued from the floods of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. I volunteer with a local Humane Society in Florida and my husband and I agreed to become foster parents for Kirby.

When he first arrived at our home he was tired, hungry and dirty. It took him a while to get comfortable with us but we spoiled him rotten. After two months he had become a much loved pet and got along very well with our other three dogs. We permanently adopted him after the required waiting period.

A few weeks later we learned that Kirby's original owner had been located. She had moved to the state of Virginia and of course, she wanted Kirby returned to her. The reunion was scheduled for the following week and although we miss him very much, we are happy that he is back home where he belongs.” - Kit Danes

"I'm so glad this dog came to be safe and back to his owners again! I think you're very nice and warm people as you looked after him so kindly. When I watched news about those terrible days I couldn't stop thinking about pets in disgrace. Get the best of my thoughts from Spain and be sure I think your country is big because you citizens make it big an human. XXX."
